School: Oscar DePriest Elementary School
Artist statement: In recent years, my family has gone through some challenging times with my Dad being diagnosed with cancer. I created this piece, Family Tree, to represent all that my family is to me; the good moments and the bad, but most of all, I wanted to express how beautiful every moment is. The roots of the tree symbolize the hard, painful, and messy times, because although these might not be our favorite family moments; without the dirt and the roots, the tree has no way of living and growing. The body of the tree represents my family’s journey, knotted and twisted but also vibrant and beautiful. The top of the tree represents my family’s future; it grows more abstract because I am not sure where the future will lead us, but I know that whatever happens we will continue to love each other with brightness, and with color, in this life, and the next.
