School: Distinctive Schools: Art in Motion – A Creative Arts School for Middle/High
Artist Statement: This was the first song where I felt like I could sing or do anything in the world. This performance actually occurred right before I performed it in the production of Die Fledermaus as the lead soprano, Rosalinda… which was a great feat in itself, but just a few months before I told myself and several of my friends that I would not even audition for that years production because there wasn’t a place for me. So, you could have imagined my surprise when my voice teacher handed me the sheet music to this song the very same week and told me to start preparing it. The even more surprising part was I tried to sing the same song about two weeks before and I didn’t even get halfway through it without giving up. But, when my teacher did the small act of handing me a stack of papers with the notes printed on them, it was like a light switch came on in my voice and the song was able to take flight… and so was I!
