Artist Statement: With this piece, I wanted to explore the unique connection my mom and I have. She’s my sole custodian, and we have this super strong bond. When I first came out as transgender and started my transition, I worried that my being her son rather than her daughter might strain our relationship. In fact, it might have made it stronger. We’ve always been pretty open with each other, but coming out really opened our emotional boundaries and made it easier for us to talk about heavier stuff. This is my back, and my mother’s hands.
