Artist Statement: I am a storytelling artist who uses photography and creative writing to amplify the stories of myself and the culture I am surrounded by. My work as a photographer is heavily focused around portraiture and the way the body conveys sensation. My storytelling work ranges but recently the focus has been on the struggles of identity and self preservation in a society that one was not made to thrive in.
I choose to make art around these subjects because they are so prevalent in my existence that they can’t be ignored. I’ve chosen to reframe traditions of storytelling from the specific lens of a young woman of color. This is due to the lack of representation that women of color face and continue to face in the society that we are currently surviving in.
