Artist Statement: In 2014, I was awarded a Fund for Teachers fellowship to travel to Cuba. My Cuban heritage has always been a complex issue for me, as my mom fled the country when she was a child and I grew up without a direct connection to my Cuban family or culture. I visited the country with the goal of making connections with my roots, as well as finding ways to better relate to my Latino students. In this photo, I have overlapped a picture of my great-grandmother and aunt standing outside my family’s home in 1954, with the building (now a hostel, art gallery, and café) in 2014.
