Artist Statement: Inspired by expressionism and neorealism, as well as my theme of desire, I developed “raw craving”. The art style suggests an eerie and uncertain feeling, seeing that the protagonist’s face isn’t defined as other features, particularly the eyes. This technique aspires to imply the messy reality of desire, how one may think purely of their need or want (hence the white shirt), but, in truth, it’s a messy approach and result (hence the bloody stain). Also notice how the protagonist’s teeth are the only characteristic that is detailed, highlighting her crave. Additionally, as mentioned in the title, the meat is raw, suggesting how strong the protagonist’s desire really is. Lastly, this artwork aims to be disturbing yet aesthetically pleasing, with there being a balance between tones as well as other factors.
