Artist Statement: My work, is to be able to determine what may make a child or young adult more susceptible to gaining addictions, while also being able to reflect on how my culture may also be making me grow an addictive personality.

In Mexican-American culture, parents often over celebrate their children or accomplishments. This made me realize that a lot of hispanic parties involve alcohol as well as candies. The alcohol is meant for the adults to loosen up and enjoy the moment, the candy is there for the children. This helped me develop my idea on an addiction to eating within this community. However, while thinking more, I have realized that it may not simply be a community that celebrates but a generation that pressures another into growing the same addictive personality as them. In my first piece, the idea was binge eating. The image was inspired by my personal desk at home. The hispanic candies on the table were from a party I had recently gone to and I wanted to show that in the piece. The second piece revolves around the idea of alcoholism. How many celebrations needed to have alcohol to be celebrated “correctly”.
