Artist Statement: I use art to portray the positive side of the world. As a Latinx teenager in South Chicago, seeing the right side of the world can be difficult. One can get lost through the continued fights through gun violence, single-parent homes, poverty, air pollution, food deserts, and the list goes on. Despite the negativity, my pieces express the ease and security of the pursuit of happiness, even when our community makes it seem impossible. Therefore, as a creative youth, I am expressive, memorable, and I believe through my art pieces, I can give people a sense of joy, even when the issues in this world make it hard.
My art mainly consists of acrylic paint, construction paper, video production, photography, modeling, and performance within my mixed media work. I used acrylic paint and construction paper to portray happy scenarios and beautiful landscapes I wish to see in South Chicago. It is a beautiful landscape in “My Dream Window” I wish to see instead of abandoned buildings and smoke from nearby factories.
My thought process behind my art pieces comes from my desire for a better life, not only for myself but also for the people around me. I love how my art can either bring a laugh or a lively expression to the people I collaborate with and my viewers. I still have lots of room to grow as an artist, and I plan to continue my journey to evolve as an artist and a person. I firmly believe continuing to explore my love for different art forms will give me the chance to help bring joy in the state of the art to the places that need it the most.
