A perfect example of an artist who made significant social change through their art is Lorraine Hansberry. As a playwright, she brought the South Side of Chicago to Broadway and explored the state of Race Relations and Real-estate in the 1950’s in her masterpiece that is A Raisin in the Sun. The title of the play is inspired by the poem, “Harlem” by Langston Hughes and gave the poem new life. We also love this play because of how clearly she spells out family dynamics and generational difference within the Younger family. After reading and hearing the play out loud, we took a step into the shoes of these amazing characters and presented monologues from the very play that changed our world view on Race in America and see how it resonates today.
