Artist Statement:

The traditional housewife of the 1950s nuclear family is servile. She is quiet, she completes endless chores without complaint, she nurtures, she is docile and kind, and most importantly, she has a hot meal waiting every time her husband comes home from work. I wanted to take these norms and shred them to pieces with this photo. I wanted to let out some of the anger of women everywhere, anger towards the fact that these norms of domesticity are still upheld today. I wanted to depict the housewife as someone with power, someone standing up to those ideals. By portraying this concept in an outlandish, gory way, the ridiculousness of these norms seems obvious. Taking down these expectations begins by saying “I’m done complying with ideals that are meant to tear me down.” The fight for women’s rights did not end after suffrage, it ends when women are held to the same expectations of the average man.
