Artist Statement:
Growing up in a neighborhood that has been going through gentrification for most of my life. I began to become tired of retailers and corporate businesses capitalizing off of my neighborhood’s culture, especially when they were the ones who contributed to the displacement of the residents who had occupied this neighborhood initially. When taking my image, I intended to represent my neighborhood through the lens of someone who has lived there their whole life. Someone who sees their neighborhood as more than just a “beautiful neighborhood”, but rather as a home made up of the good and bad. A home filled with memories, nostalgic places, and its roots of community. This image was taken on a street that is less recognized by the media. In the background is an image of “Donald’s Famous Hot Dogs”, a small business in my neighborhood that has thrived for many years.
