Artist Statement:

My piece consists of a color pencil and graphite drawing of me and my two siblings. We are all wearing the same pair of silver headphones that represent how we are all influenced by the same system. Surrounding us are different musical notes on silver staffs. All of the elements unite to display how we are entranced by the words, stories, and traditions from generations that came before us that ultimately turn into music. The music is a form of connection that connects us to the same cycle of family lore and trauma that’s shared. Each of us have different facial expressions ranging from smiling to unamused to convey the effects of being forced to listen. I used colored pencils to highlight our hair textures and colors that are different because of the genetics passed down from those before us. I used graphite for our facial features to represent how we are also the same.
