Artist Statement: My name is Melaya Thomas, I am in 11th grade. When making art, I often attempt to inspire my audience to leave with a meaningful impact after viewing a piece. Attack On Feminism is a graphite and ink piece. The linework resembles those of muscles, or wood, to show raw, naturality toward the piece. This piece was made in response to the Roe v. Wade overturn in mid-2022. There are 3 figures posed in the center of the piece, taking direct inspiration from the Three Graces in Greek Mythology- inspired by the famous Rafael- they are great symbols of feminism. The middle Grace has an external female reproductive system, showing the vulnerability of women in states that do not support reproductive rights. There are a pair of hands hovering over the Graces. These hands resemble the invasion of reproductive rights that were once protected nationwide. I believe reproductive rights should be protected for everyone under every circumstance.
