Artist Statement:

This piece, titled Daydreams, explores the theme of dreams through the story of a girl who uses dreams and imagination as a means of escaping her harsh reality. I show this by separating two drastically different settings in a comic-style format, and in the middle, a girl is falling into her dreams. At first glance, the piece may appear innocent, resembling a child-like dream. However, once you look closer you can see a cluttered, dark room representing the messy life she seeks to escape— showing the sad reality of the girl that is shown in this piece.
I also decided to use symbolism in order to further show my theme. For example, the upside-down heart represents grief, a recurring symbol throughout the piece, suggesting that no matter how much we attempt to escape, the pain remains unless we confront it head-on.
The inspiration for this piece came from the game Needy Streamer Overload, which tells the story of a girl who escapes her problems by staying on the internet all day and hiding behind a cute and lovable online persona. This game is one of my favorites and the message resonated deeply with me and I decided to use it as inspiration for my artwork.
