Artist Statement:

My piece consists of a color pencil drawing of a pair of scissors. Surrounding the scissors, there are staples stapled into the paper and tape taped down onto the black background. The forms of adhesive and bonding methods are meant to physically represent the comfort in having emotional stability. I thought this was the perfect image to portray the feelings of pressure when discussing anxious attachment styles and the power of control. The idea of “holding everything together” is represented through the tape, staples, and pins. It portrays the act of attempting to prevent something from going astray but the scissors cutting the ribbon in the center contradicts all the bonding methods (staples, tape, and pins). The juxtaposition of the scissors and the pins, tape, and staples highlights the contrasting ideas of feeling secure and feeling broken.
