Artist Statement:
The fragile, broken, and incomplete ceramic represents the missing fragments of my identity. The gaps are filled with sharp barbed wire. Each piece is covered in written words of the Croatian and English language intermixed. The handwritten text in black features hatred, and the colorful writing is supportive and encouraging words that I was told when I moved to the US. The indecipherable sentp;-lkjplbnmm
oluytrtooooopoopoiiences emphasize my lack of understanding towards the English language, and includes harsh commentary I was given in my efforts to learn english. The barbed wire carries the incarcerating feeling of being ‘trapped’ in my dual identity, unable to conform to the barriers that society has placed on me.
