Artist Statement:

This project was to create a collage that represented my mother in some of her favorite
colors. My mother is someone who has helped me accomplish my needs and desires. She has
been my number one supporter. She and I share similar interests which makes our connection
unique. I visually described my concept with more than one color pattern, mostly purples, pinks,
and whites. One pattern that I used included floras. This pattern connects to her love for flowers
and plants. The light colors in the checkered pattern represent the warm and friendly mood she
brought to anyone she met. In this project I used about three different shade ranges. For the
lightest shade range, I used the checkered pattern to illustrate the stuffed animal next to my
mother in the image and facial features on her face. For the second shade range, I used a purple
floral pattern to represent the base of clothing, darker shades around the image, and the stuffed
animal’s shades. And for the last shade range, I used a black floral pattern to represent the
darkest shade ranges to her hair, to any other darker shades in the image.
The most successful part of my project was getting all of the patterns in the correct range
shades. A problem I faced throught the making of the project was not finding enough patterns to
make the project more detailed. My attempt to overcome any perceived challenges I had was to
make sure the patterns I could find were in the colors I had originally wanted and not colors that
I wouldn’t like. I was most influenced by student examples from this project because most of
them had great detail to their project by using more patterns and not three like I did.
