Artist Statement: These street photos were all captured in Black and White film, with both manual and automatic film cameras. I’m inspired by the natural flow of people in the city, and how its infrastructure affects how people work, play, move, and express themselves. I aim to find the beauty in everyday life in all those that make up the city we call home. Each of the human influences and people in the photos have individual dreams: some dreams push them forward, like a hope for a better life fueled by hard work and passion. Other dreams hold them back, like the all-consuming thoughts of fear and struggle. Chicagoans’ dreams are expressed in raw form in this portfolio, portraying the starkness of the human condition in an urban setting. Black and white film enhances this understanding of stark truths, while the medium of film suggests each photo to be a permanent moment in time and an irrevocable reality of Chicago and its people. This idea of permanence and the physicality behind film photography is the reason for it being my primary medium, and the one I enjoy most for street photography.
