Artist Statement:

My name is Caitlyn Shane and I am a junior at Lane Tech High School. I have previously not been the most artistic person, but deciding to take the photography class at lane has really allowed me to explore my creativity and find my artistic side. I am normally into photographing colorful and bright images as seen in my first image “Art in Nature”. This image took place in Lane’s Aquaponics Lab which is a great location filled with colorful plants and fish. I loved the coloring on these leaves and wanted to capture the beauty in natural objects. However, we had a “Film Noir” in which we had to capture all of our images in black and white. Although this was the opposite of what I normally like to photograph, I really enjoyed capturing more creepy, obscene photos. My other two submissions, “Dead Hand” and “Call for Help,” were a part of this unit. I enjoyed the creativity I could explore with only the skeleton hand. Both images feature this hand, but in different contexts. After completing this unit I realized that I don’t only like capturing colorful images, but also darker images that can tell a story. Overall, my submissions represent the opposing ends I have explored in my photography.
