Artist Statement:
This piece is of a character I created — Kelphie. Kelphie is based on a siren, so I wanted to draw an idea of how she might look if she was more fish like, in a way? I wanted to try to make the viewer feel like they were underwater as well, which is why I blurred some pieces of the image to represent how one’s vision would be underwater. The context behind this piece is that Kelphie gets overwhelmed by the ocean despite it being her homeland. She belongs in the water, but since she was raised on land, she feels disconnected from the sea. To put it simply, I made this piece mainly for character building, as I wanted to flesh out Kelphie’s character more — and I found that the best way to do this was through drawing.
