Artist statement: In this artwork, I wanted to express myself and embrace my cultural identity as an Asian American living in Chicago. I wanted to incorporate aspects that represent my Chinese side like the dragon, the food (Asian baos, dumplings, ramen, etc.), Chinese lanterns, the flowers, and more. I also included the Willis Tower to represent Chicago as my home. I included riots and in the top left-hand corner, protesting signs (made and written by actual people found on the internet) to display and bring awareness to the cultural issues that we are facing. This is important to me because as I am coming of age and entering adulthood, I’m going to experience different reactions and even for being Asian. During Covid, the Asian community and myself was hurt by society. My grandpa was physically beat up by strangers which made me furious. I want this piece to be a representation of my life and journey as well as show other people to end this violence not just in Chicago but everywhere the world.
