Artist Statement: Something I learned growing up was my struggle with identity: my skin was too light to be Latina, or I was not American enough. I am Mexican and Guatemalan, making me a Chicana on behalf of my Mexican-American side. This loteria piece let me represent my people as strong, courageous, determined, beautiful, and fierce. I wanted this piece to show my pride in my culture and in being Latina. The card number refers to the 1995 Chicano movement. I hand painted this in Illustrator, no automated processes or filters were applied.
