Description: My piece is based on the experience of being born a girl in Mexican culture, which traditionally means you’re responsible for cleaning and cooking, taking care of the kids and only being seen as future mothers and wives. This is because it is the standard that is put on girls at a young age and was inflicted on me when I was younger but I was not prepared for at such a young age. I used the blanket to show that it was a big part of my childhood since I even still have it now and cherish it since it was given to me by my grandpa and he did the same for my sister but I used this to symbolize an object that was my childhood and that I was gripping it to make sure that I didn’t let it go even when I was told to.
