Artist Statement: My work explores body language in humans. I aim to shed light on the importance of body language to my audience and how vital our bodies serve as a method of communication. I believe demonstrating the art of body language through dance enunciates its significance and so I began researching artists who specialize in movement such as Edgar Degas, André Derain, and Henri Matisse. I was heavily inspired by these artists’ use of composition and color and aimed to mimic the fluidity in their figures. For materials, I chose to work with chalky pastels because I think they have a certain flow to the way they blend out and I love the color payoff! As for the poses I opted to research iconic dance routines and decided on Swan Lake. Swan Lake is a very known recital that’s been performed all over the world but its meaning resonated with me in the sense that it invokes a sense of reflection upon the viewer and sheds light on our own definitions of turmoil within ourselves conveying the representation of endurance in the human body.
