Artist Statement: I create simply for the art of creation. There is pressure that is put on artists of all mediums to attach meaning to their work, even if there originally was no meaning. Most of my paintings in my portfolio are inspired by different songs that I like, however they don’t represent the emotions I feel listening to that song; they are recreations of what I see in the music. I take patterns and colors that form in my mind and create a more cohesive picture in a sketch, then I transfer a final draft onto a canvas. Not only do I see patterns and colors, but I see people as well. I picture a face or a body in a song mixed with the patterns and colors and create portraits, whether they be of fully-fleshed human beings or skeletons with their own personalities.
While these pieces have sentimental meaning to me, as they are products of my own design, they don’t tend to take on a familiar or traditional meaning. This is not to say that all of my pieces are for the sake of the creation; one of my favorite paintings I’ve created, “No Rest For The Reluctant”, has very deep memories and emotions attached to it. That being said, as an artist I want to break away from the assumption that all art has deep meaning by showing that art with little to none can be, and is, still captivating and beautiful.
