Artist Statement: My hybrid piece is a combination of a tree and a pregnant woman’s figure. The body/tree is painted brown to symbolize the tree bark color as well as a woman of color, along with a green cotton afro which also symbolizes the leaves. This piece represents how essential and rooted black women are within their families and communities, as well as the power women have to recreate life. It symbolizes growth and life blossoming within a woman in various ways, and that process simultaneously being embedded in our lives. As a black woman, this piece is extremely personal, and I wanted to display the strength, power, and potential that fellow women hold as we grow.
