Artist Statement: The juxtaposition of soft and hard, organic and geometric is reflective of my growth as a mother following the birth of my daughter Beatrix. During that first year, I found myself negotiating my roles of artist, teacher and mother. The soft, round, organic peonies represent the love for my daughter. The petals are inviting and envelop the space they occupy, as she has enveloped the space in my heart. The hard, precise and geometric lines that overlay the soft forms represent the desire to break down the experience to its fundamental form. Without each other one cannot exist without the other, as I cannot exist without her and she at that time could not without me.
