Artist Statement: Classic Paper Cathedral -I have made a classical style cathedral out of paper. When picking a structure to do out of paper, my mind kept wandering back to
architecture. I decided to just replicate a grand structure. I based my creation off of the White House, Berlin Cathedral and Capital building. I really like the look of grand, domed buildings, so that’s how I built my structure. The techniques I used were rolls, tabs, folding cuts, folds and cones. I used the tabs and folds the most to support my structure and
things I wanted to pop out, such as the arch on the front and the columns. I used rolls to make a cylinder to sit my main dome on. I used folding cuts to make the balconies on the sides. I used folds to do almost everything in this piece, from folding my columns to folding the tabs supporting the building. I used cones to make the three domes I have on my project. I cut slips of paper, then folded them around each other like you would make a cone. My main motivation for this specific type of paper structure is my admiration for classical architecture. My structure is in no way as complex, but I was able to learn how to make some more interesting components of it using paper techniques. I really liked this
project as I love working with paper, such as with card making and origami.
