Artist Statement: Inspired by Barbara Kruger’s “ Not Stupid Enough”, this piece shows a portrait of Marilyn Monroe. Monroe was a woman who was mistreated by the media, hence why her image is used in this piece and Kruger’s. Women are constantly silenced by society, their voices are diminished. Monroe’s portrait is in black and white to show how draining the silencing can be. The red streak across her mouth is to show how Monroe and multiple other women are silenced whenever they try to speak up.
