Description: I was inspired by the quote, “No, another social outcast” from the novel The Outsiders. I have been practicing pieces that reflect isolation and self-reflection and I felt this quote fit well within the theme. A person standing alone is the chaos, labeled an outcast, forced to be alone. I began my process by layering a glue and water mixture, tracing the phase I wished to print. I added 7-8 layers to make certain I sealed off everything I did not want to be printed. Once my stencil was dry I used red paint and an old library card to print my quote onto a sheet of 9x12in mixed media paper. I layered the print as well as placed the words at various angles, This, in turn, created depth and value to the piece. After I completed printing the quote, I sketched a silhouette of a human, standing alone in the center of the piece. I used black acrylic to paint the figure and added a shadow to create depth. This person represents the social outcast in the quote. They are isolated and alone, standing in the chaos.
